I had a customer contact me in late November whose husband had died in October. She asked if I could make two quilts out of his shirts for his daughters.

As I see the shirts, I feel like I get to know the person. From this wonderful array of shirts, I suspected this man had a love of the sea. I leave it to the customer to share what they want with me and, indeed, he did love fishing and boating.

Sometimes I combine shirts if I have too many or if some are filled with spots. Sometimes the stains are part of the character and history of the shirt.

I found this beautiful fabric at JoAnn that just spoke of the sea and captured the lovely shades of blue and green in the shirts.

Two quilts for two daughters. In the process and busy-ness of preparing the quilts I had forgotten how recently this man had died.

The other day I received a not from one of his daughters. She wrote:

"Our stepmother had you make quilts for my sister and me for Christmas from our father's t shirts. I am sure she told you that he had passed away October 20th. When I first received the quilt I was really shocked. It was hard seeing his t shirts cut up, really making it real that he would not be wearing them anymore. My husband put up the blanket that night because he could see that it upset me. Well, the next morning, Christmas eve morning, I got up and said "where is my blanket?". He got the blanket out for me, I wrapped myself in it, rubbed those t shirts and was so happy to feel so near to my Daddy.

I now call it my magic quilt. Having it has really been a turning point for me to accepting my Daddy's death.

I think you made the quilt on short notice for her and I want to thank you!!!"

I found this note so touching on many levels. First, of course, it's always nice to receive positive feedback. Secondly, it makes me sensitive to the needs of the customer. I think, perhaps, I lost sight of how recently this wonderful husband and father had passed away. And most importantly, it affirms my belief that this throw can be a comforting reminder of the extraordinary life of an ordinary person. This man was extraordinary to his family and, perhaps, beyond. And picturing someone wrapping themselves up in a blanket filled with tangible memories is comforting to me.

It was a pleasure and an honor to create this quilt for you!

Thursday Thoughts on Life - "Throw" Pillows ! ? !

You know how I hang out on Etsy? I admire the beautiful shops with the gorgeous pillows. A pillow is a great palette on which to experiment with all kinds of artistic stitchery.

I'd share one here, but don't want to imply that I think pillows are superfluous. (I featured a number of pillows in a treasury on Tuesday.)

Pillows ARE practical. We need them to sleep or cozy up on the couch.

And the pillows I see on Etsy or in lovely home magazines ARE pretty.

But in my house, the "throw" pillows are usually "thrown". If you have boys, you know that any object can become a projectile. See that lovely cube? Even THAT has been a projectile! Sigh....

In my opinion, pillows are a pain. I made these yellow pillows with a lovely brushed yellow home decorating fabric that matches my yellow walls perfectly. I added a piping and throw them into the wash whenever I think too long about how much they sit on the floor. They have pen marks and, probably, drool marks. Every day I pick them off the floor and place them neatly into the corner.

Whenever you have guests at the house, you have to hide them because they simply take up too much space!

So the throw pillow: necessary evil? beautiful room accent? pain in the butt? projectile? work of art?

Wednesday Sewing - A Sewing Wreath

A while ago I shared a JoAnn project with you for making a spool wreath. Annie set her mind to making me one as a Christmas gift. She ordered some inexpensive thread from Amazon. The spools were a lot smaller than she thought they would be. She started the project with a styrofoam wreath, but decided to change it to the green wreath above.

She embellished it with buttons, measuring tape and mini-hangars.

I love it and plan to keep it in the sewing studio year-round!

Design Ideas - Wine Cork Wreath

I have been wanting to make a wine cork wreath for some time. I have made a few crafts using corks including trays and cork boards. Our neighbors had a wine-tasting party this past weekend and I decided this would be a fun hostess gift to bring. I used the excellent DIY tutorial here.

It took me about 45" and a LOT of hot melt glue! My photos aren't that great because I was making it 45" before the party started!

I am guessing I used about 80 to 100 corks, about 1/3 of my collection. (I did not drink all these bottles. I obtained a bunch from a local wine restaurant. Those corks are all very similar in design, so I used those for the base and the more unique corks on top.

Our neighbors were thrilled and we had a fantastic time at the party!

What's New? T Shirt Memory Quilts!

I am so excited to share a finished quilt made by a local customer! Check out her post and a quite amazing first quilt she made over on her blog "A League of Her Own."

She did an excellent job making this quilt for her brother.

She used my T Shirt Memory Quilt Pattern, which you can find here.

One of the quilts I made in December was for a woman who was giving it to her sister. It's one of the first college quilts I made. I hope her sister loved it!

Christmas Spoiled

Being the youngest child of six I was often told I was "spoiled" - even though my siblings were often the ones who spoiled me! Our special friend/babysitter Karen was particularly keen on spoiling me...and my retort was:

"I'm not spoiled, I'm happy!!!"

Well, I AM a happy old gal! This is a little late, but I wanted to share with you just a few of the goodies I received this Christmas. My oldest daughter bought me this wine glass holder with the wonderful Austen quote from Pride & Prejudice! She got it from the very neat shop Etched In Time.

That bottle of wine? Yep, from my neighbors! That's in addition to the Nike jogging jacket they gave me! Yep. I'm spoiled!

This tree-shaped bottle was from my friends Karen & Bob. I also got "Wine-opoly" from them, appropriately enough!

But they didn't stop there. They gave me this fabulous, knit sweater coat! I LOVE it and have been wearing all the time. It is super-soft merino wool and keeps me close to my Irish roots! Everyone thinks I knit it!

Annie made all of her gifts, including the web site for her brother, earrings for her sister and a gun-rack (don't ask) for her other brother. Inspired by something she had seen on Etsy, she made me two personal drink holders. These are great for our sectional for which we only have one end table.

I helped my youngest son make his presents, also. For a couple family members who worry, we framed Shel Silversteins "What If" poem and he drew a corresponding picture.

Yes, I am spoiled and happy and blessed!

Jazz, a Birthday, and a Weebly

A shoutout to Jessica Vidmar who came out to the house to take these amazing photos! Joey was in need of more professional photos to use in his business cards and fliers. Our dear friends gave him the gift of a sitting and Jessica came to the house and worked amid the dust and the chaos to produce these wonderful shots.

Annie made everyone's Christmas presents so we decided that this was the perfect time to create a website for Joey. As I continue to work on my site from Weebly we added a site for him. Annie did the design work and now my son is starting to tweek it and update it! Check it out here.

Tuesday Inspiration - Beachwrite

As I prepare for the funeral of a friend's brother - another victim of cancer - I think about what inspires me. Mainly, the lives of ordinary people. I've shared with you that I love biographies, non-fiction, survival stories. I love to read about amazing people. But in making memory quilts I am also reminded of the amazing lives or ordinary people. The daily struggles people face, the health battles, personal losses and triumphs.

I discovered Beachwrite and love the concept! The photo above is an example of her work. I love the beautiful photography and the capturing of what seems like something so fleeting.

Not only is the product of Beachwrite something I love, but the owner, Carolyn, is sharing the very personal story of her mom's battle with cancer. She has written so eloquently of how this story has unfolded and of the time she is sharing with her mom in the hospital. It reminds me of the time my family and I spent with my father as he was dying. Real - life. Inspiring.

New In the Shop - Coffee Sack Aprons

Happy Friday! Can it already be Friday, the 13th? I was busy with burlap - burlap from coffee sacks, that is! Here's a random collection of photos of the five new aprons I've added to my shop. Adult Apron-Style Bib Free PDF Pattern

My dear nieces asked me to sew an adult bib for their nana. She has tremors and has a hard time feeding herself. To protect her clothes she uses a bib. The girls bought some pretty fabrics and ask me to make the bibs. We wanted to create a more of an apron feeling, so I shaped the bottom of the bib like my aprons. It is intended to gently drape over the legs. The girls have reported that Nana loves them!

Tuesday Inspiration - the Words of a Coach

We've moved on from football to basketball. Last night we were at my son's tournament championship game. They had won all three of their games. The air was charged. School friends and cheerleaders were in attendance; there was announcing of the players and the singing of the National Anthem. Watching the previous girl's game wrap up, I saw the runner-up team receive a trophy and the championship team receive a trophy and individual medals. Each girl was called by name as her coach presented her with the medal.

Our game began evenly matched - or so it seemed. It was fast-paced and physical. The other team was unstoppable, however. They maneuvered the ball well and sunk nearly all of their shots. They were amazing! Our team received the tournament runner-up trophy and the champions were crowned. When it came time for the coach to hand out the medals, he was was reminded to present them to the members of the team. Instead, he held up the group of medals in his hand and said, "We are the Cougars. We are a team. There are no individuals."

I was really impressed by the coach's words. I believe that a strong team is just that - a team working together. As I watch the Cleveland Cavaliers, they appear to be a team now. With LeBron James, who was no denying a superstar and very fun to watch, the team seems to rely on each other more and play as a team.

I believe it is possible to have superstars on a team, but I also believe a successful team requires leadership. How does one inspire excellence and success? I believe there is a physical component but, mostly, psychological component. A coach like Lou Holtz, for example, who demonstrated success as a coach, could motivate his players.

How about Ernest Shackleton? He must have been a leader to get people to respond to this ad:

"Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success."

Endurance is one of my favorite books. I'm amazed at the ability of Shackleton to assemble a group of men willing to go on an antarctic mission, to lead them into it and successfully lead them out of their ordeal of being trapped in pack ice. It's an amazing story of survival - and leadership. (The photographs of this expedition are equally amazing.)

I admit, I am not much of a team player. I didn't play team sports when I was a younger girl. I didn't have much of an opportunity to do so, nor the desire. The few times I had to play during gym (hated that class!)I was afraid I would let the rest of the team down. I focused, instead, on sports and activities that relied on my own abilities - like tennis, swimming and ice skating.

In the corporate world, I was often placed on a team. I admit that here, also, I did not always enjoy being on a team. Just because a team exists does not guarantee it will operate successfully. I believe a team requires successful management - or coaching. In a rudderless team there can be a lot of jockeying for power.

In the local news today a coach and physical education teacher facilitated the track team drinking egg nog and then running until they puked. (Last man standing wins.) Apparently this is a common exercise around the country in running clubs. Some support her actions saying that it wasn't "required." I don't see anything healthy about this practice. Not to mention the fact that the coach posted the video on Facebook. Is this leadership? Is this inspiring kids?

My youngest son has been involved in team sports more than anyone else in my family. I tell him that he has to love the sport and love the practice because it is a huge time commitment and there are no guarantees that he will see playing time. I enjoy watching sports and admire the amazing physical prowess of athletes. But I am more intrigued by the ability of coaches to inspire excellence.

This week has been a series of highs and lows. I felt a surge of energy to tackle new projects and goals. Then I crashed and burned. A warm thank you to all of you who gave me encouragement this week! I truly appreciate it.

I am looking forward to a weekend with very few commitments which will enable me to sew and knit. My college daughter is home for another week so she has been busy organizing things. It's so refreshing to have another person help with this because she has removed tons of extraneous stuff from the office/studio. She organized all the bookshelves and drawers on the office side. She even thinned out my husband's books (no easy task!) She has gone through all the CDs and DVDs, pitched duplicates, labeled and stored them. She is going to tackle finishing up the home movies where I left off. (What year was that????) Today we will finish the sewing/craft side. When you start organizing you create a temporary mess, so I haven't been able to sew much this week beyond my little felt bag.

Next week you will see some new coffee sack aprons like this one.

One of my goals this year is to get a better handle on my inventory and bookkeeping, so I purchased this spreadsheet from Handmadeology Business.

I ordered new labels from Jennifers Jewels and new business cards.

I have a new website I'm working on, but I'll share information on that another time. I'm also working on some newer, more professional photos for my bios and avatars, thanks to my nephew-in-law-to-be. Here's a few:

I am wearing my new Twillypop necklace that you can especially see in the last photo (along with all my wrinkles....).

I LOVE my Twillypop necklace!!! I wore it everywhere during the holidays! I love Twillypop the shop and the person. (And, Sara has a really nice neck....something I realize I will never have again.)

I have made a renewed effort to take advantage of Spark People. It's a great website for tracking nutrition and fitness goals and, well, don't we all start out with grand plans of improving those areas of our lives?

That's a little of what's new in my life. I can't wait to share some of the amazing presents I received, especially Annie's handmade creations and some of the many Etsy gifts my daughter and I bought to give! I welcome 2012 with all its potential and, yes, even the inevitable lows. With friends and family along for the ride, I know I will survive the journey.

Do you ever get the should bes?

I try to be mindful of the moment that I live in. But it's hard to prevent the should bes from creeping in.

I even had a bit of a meltdown the other day. And, of course, I felt guilty about that!

We rarely cut ourselves a break.

But I was exhausted form the holiday week, worried about getting my son back to college with an impending snowstorm, and thinking about all the should bes.

Happy New Year! December was busy with shop sewing including quite a few quilts. I'll be sharing those and some of Annie's handmade gifts in upcoming posts. I did make a football tote for my dear friend who goes to a lot of football games with me!

That was about the extent of my gift sewing. I designed an adult bib pattern for my niece's grandmother that I plan to share soon.

Our wonderful neighbors had a baby boy. It is such fun to knit for babies because it is relatively fast knitting. Inspired by a sweater my friend was knitting, the Child's Placket-Neck Pullover, I decided to make a similar sweater.

The details are here on my Ravelry page. Instead of following the pattern, I bought the yarn and plugged the yarn gauge into my Sweater Wizard program. I love using this program since I usually knit straightforward patterns. You can customize the sweater size, direction of knitting, neck design, etc. I started knitting the sleeve and confirmed my gauge was correct and continued with the Sweater Wizard pattern.

Our neighbors were thrilled to receive it and I can't wait to see their little boy in it!

Tuesday Inspiration - Meet Courtney of timelessNchic

I am so excited about my interview today. I met Courtney on Twitter years ago. Well, I don't think it was years ago, but she's the kind of woman you feel like you've known for a long time. In fact, I think she was the first person to strike up a conversation with lonely old me.

The first thing I learned about Courtney is that she is warm and welcoming and plays it straight. She's got a big Texan heart and is bursting with enthusiasm. (And I know all this just from the internet....)

The next thing I learned is that she is an amazing creative! Her shop, timelessNchic , is filled with beautiful creations and colors! She had an amazing collection of candlesticks in an array of colors that would have been perfect for my Tuscan dinner party! (Of course they sold.)

It is my BABY,my little corner of the world on Etsy! I sell picture frames, candle holders,furniture…. If I can paint it – I will sell it! It embodies everything about me and what Ilove to do… which is make things look OLD! I have such a passion for old rustic, weathered time-worn pieces – so whynot create a product that exudes that feel? I went with that feeling years ago and have no regrets!

Ialso hate using periods for sentences… so you will see a lot of these……. (-------LOL! (Another TimelessNchic fact!)

Whatwas your inspiration?

I actually startedmaking things look old MANY years ago when I would frame my son’s artwork (over10+ years ago)….. That was BIG forme. I wanted to express to him how proudI was of his work – so I would frame them in frames that I painted anddistressed to look old. You can say thatmy son was absolutely my inspiration.

Howdid you get started?

It took many yearsbefore I decided to open up shop (Ebay) and go for it…… I think that was alittle over 5 years ago that I originally started on Ebay….. I started thereselling just vintage pieces and I kept seeing distressed frames being sold, andI immediately knew from that point forward that is what I wanted to do andsell…...I was more of the artistic person, rather than the one selling someoneelse’s work of art… I wanted to show people what I had been doing for so manyyears, so I started with frames and smaller pieces, and grew from there. I still love selling vintage/antique pieces,but mostly prefer to do my “timeless thang”.

Howlong have you had an Etsy shop?

I openedmy Etsy shoppe in April of 2009. WOW! How time flies! It will be three years before I know it. AMAZING! I couldn’t be happier…..

Walkus through a typical day.

I work a fulltime “corporate job”….. so… I wake up each morning and get ready for my typical“work day”. I do wake up earlier thanrequired so I can try to answer Etsy conversations, or even get some picturesin of new items so I can “secretly” list them while at work. SHHHHH…. Don’t tell anyone. When I get home from work, I will get dinnerdone (if I don’t already have something in the crock pot – I thank GOD forthose – they save many women’s lives I tell ya!) I also try to walk every other day… Anddepending on the day, I will watch tv with my family and package up Etsy items,or I am in the garage painting! I don’tstop…. and when I do – I am like trying to wake up the dead. With that said, I DO try to limit my “daily”Etsy activity as much as possible though, and have “family time”, because, well,that is what matters most in this life! Etsy definitely takes up my entire weekend though…. Listing, staging, painting, measuring…. It isa full time job ! Did I mention I alsogo “junkin” 2-4 days a week?

Whatdo you love/hate about blogging?

I juststarted blogging and I hate that no one comments… LOL… I hate that I haveliterally NO followers… (I know – want a little cheese with that wine??)… butBOY DO I LOVE WRITING… even if no one comments, I know, deep down that someoneis reading it. Whatever the topic of theday, I KNOW they felt something from it. Whether it be a laugh, some inspiration, or another emotion. Someone somewhere was touched, so I feel myjob for the day is done…

Doyou enjoy other hobbies?

I LOVE tojunk. Is that officially a hobby? LOL… it sure is therapeutic. Even though I am spending money, it is such awonderful feeling… I get such excitement out of my finds and thinking of what Iwill do with them. I love doing anythingand everything with my teenage son, if I am invited… and I LOVE raising myother children – my 3 dogs and 3 rescued cats – folks neuter/spay youranimals!!!!! They are definitely my freetherapy and there is SO much to learn from them! Animals ROCK!

Doyou work and/or study outside the home?

Just answered that question up above! And helping my son with his homework is like studying all over again….TOUGH STUFF! (He is a senior in highschool and the light of my life btw…)

How would you describeyour fashion sense?

With my self-image,I am leggings and tunics with boots (in the cold, and in the summer, I am atypical Southern “belle” – flip flops every day, long skirts and/or dresses andMORE TUNICS!!!! LOL! I LOVE coloring my own hair, rockin’ outdifferent cuts/styles… I love tattoos… I mean I LOVE tattoos. I have A LOT and want many more… I am very eccentric and outgoing and wish Icould express myself more artistically, but cannot do so with my day job…*sniff, sniff. My home décor issimplistic modernism with lots of color. I have literally NOTHING in my home, but every wall is a differentcolor. My husband says we live in acrayola box! I DIG IT! Less clutter, less stress, less to clean – MAMAIS HAPPY! It just makes me FEELbetter. What is odd is that my home iscompletely opposite of my Etsy shoppe and what I sell…. but I hope to one day toown some land in the country… far, far, away… and live in a little abode filledwith wonderful weathered treasures!

Areyou a small town or big city girl?

Definitely small town… but live in a big one… Dear God – please make mea bird… well, you know how that goes.

Favoritevacation spot:

Anywhere in the Hill Country in Texas…also loved Germany,but was literally there for less than a day. I want to go back and I want to go back BAD… such amazingly beautifulcountryside and extremely warming people….and the HISTORY… okay, I will shutup!

Fondestchildhood memory:

Camping…. We went camping religiously…. Had camp fires…walked trails…fished….. took many a bike ride… Ate roasted marshmallows (mostimportantly!)……all that fun stuff!

Whowould you like to be for a day?

Any type of bird that can fly… just would liketo make it through the day without getting shot…lol. Birds sing a lot… they fly… soar… and have,what seems, not a care in the world…. I love them.

Bestadvice on raising a son:

Talk to them…keep those communication lines OPEN at ALL times. Tell them how much you love them. Show them how much you love them (hugs,kisses, read books, etc)….. Be proud of them, but make sure you instill in themto be proud of themselves too! Tell themto dream big…never give up hope…. and to study HARD! Too not be judgmental, be well mannered, bechivalrous, have respect, be respected… and never, ever give up on somethingyou believe in.

What'syour favorite chain type restaurant?

Ilove Chinese buffets. There is such avariety of what you can eat. Plus, youthink you are REALLY eating healthy and that it could not possibly add 10pounds to your butt, WRONG!

Whatthings are unique to where you live? As in special customs, favoriterestaurants, slang, etc. (I love to find the unique things of an areawhen I travel. So much of the USis homogenized - Anywhere USA).

Using slang words for sure! Our Southern drawl, our hospitality…. Justthe fact that no matter what your age, you will (or should) be treated withrespect and get a ma’am, thank you, bless you, and/or your welcome. MANNERS are big here. SONIC is also big here! It is a staple for the town I live in(Humble, Texas– used to be a small town, now it is ENTIRELY too over-populated, but isn’teverything?)…. It has been around for so long. Tuesday night is ½ price burger night… 2-4 is “happy hour” on drinks –but can I just say “CHERRY LIMEADE”? Oh,and their ice… they have THE BEST ICE hands down!

Yourscariest moment?

The day I became aMother… I was young and the first thing I said to the doctor was “what do I donow?”…. It is the best ride, but oh so scary – because you do not get amanual. Fashion Design Challenge and a Giveaway

Are you up for a challenge? A fashion challenge? You've got two in Jami and me! As you might have heard, I hang out on Twitter and Pinterest once in a while and have met some amazing people! Jami is from Embroidery by Everything Personal and we spend more time making each other laugh. Lamenting our fashion sense (frumpy) we decided it would be fun to see if anyone could help us out!

Jami sent some photos over to me of her typical wardrobe. I searched every photo of 2011 and found the above photos of me. Most of them are me trying to look good or going out, so I grouped them with Jami's photos because she typifies what I wear every day: jeans, tees, sweaters.

A little background....

Jami: I am all about ease and comfort. Living in New England, I spend the entire winter in jeans and sweaters. I am willing to admit that I still wear a few of my maternity tops, even though I haven't been pregnant in nearly 5 years. I like the look of vintage and classic styles, but when I shop I tend to go for function over fashion. In short: I'm pretty boring, but I'm willing to try! I can gussy myself up if the occasion calls for it, but I don't live a life that calls for much "occasion-ing" so lazy and comfy usually rule my fashion choices. Other somewhat embarrassing details to own up to: I haven't really changed my hairstyle since high school (20 years ago) and I frequently cut it myself.

Jane: In the winter I live in wool sweaters and socks! I can't stand cold feet! I love turtlenecks, because I have one (a turtle's neck, that is.) In the summer I wear tee shirts and khakis. I like jeans and khakis and wear them most days, but I don't like the low waistlines and stretchy fabrics that are common today. They do not help control my belly! When I work in the boutique I attempt to be more fashionable and my attempts at that include more structured blouses. I go out quite a bit but there are not many dress styles I find flattering. I like to think that I have a classic fashion sense, but I think I'm more classicly frump! I don't shop very often, but some of the places I like are Land's End and JCPenney.

Happy Festivus - Airing of Grievances

Since I try to be a positive person, I try not to complain too much. (Although those who know me have heard what some of my biggest gripes are....)

So when something gets under my skin, I write it down! Then my friend said that the "Festivus" holiday included an "airing of grievances" over the dinner table. I thought today would be the perfect day to share a few of my pet peeves:

- getting the last bit of salt out of the container
- turnpike stops
- cashiers who complain
- dribbly noses
- poor road designs - "No right turn between 8 AM and 12 PM" (My first traffic ticket...)
- pocket linings that rip
- bra straps that fall down
- tank tops that don't cover my bra straps
- hotel showers in which the water doesn't drain fast
- hotel shower curtains that touch me
- hotels, in general
- the breeze created by a jogger passing by
- a sneeze that isn't covered
- poor manufactured quality (This is a biggie for me. Just this week the ball bearings in our wheels cost us $600 to repair. The front ones were recalled, but not the back. The other day our power strip burned out. Yesterday, my Wilton cookie press broke. My sister still has the one my mom used! Nothing is made well anymore. I think I've already shared that all but one appliance broke within the first year of buying them. Our plasma tv lasted 4 years. The computer I am using to write this - it's dying fast - four years old.)

OK, I'm done until next year!

I hope to share one more Christmas post and return to regular blogging after the new year. I also intend to catch up on my blog reading next week!

Tuesday Inspiration - Ordinary Lives

I am always touched by the glimpse into the life of the person for whom a memory gift is being made. I have made a lot of T Shirt Memory Quilts for high school graduates, which is a celebration of the high school and grade school years. I've had the opportunity to create baby quilts from Mom and Dad shirts, a celebration of two lives coming together to make a new one! I've also made a few quilts in memory of deceased loved ones. This past month has been filled with making memory items - quilts and pillows. When I work on the quilts, for example, I am touched by the types of shirts that I see and get a glimpse into the ordinary life of someone.

Last week, a mom of Annie's friend from school brought over her brother's high school varsity jacket (or letter jacket.) She asked me to make a pillow from it. She told me that he was not doing well but that it would be a comfort to his family. She is also planning to make a T Shirt quilt and her brother's wife is going to use the football patch to make something else. (I already removed the patch in the photo above.)

The jacket was a lovely, vintage style jacket, made with wool. It is quite different from today's style which has leather in it. My son, who loves all things sports and vintage, couldn't bear to see me cut into it. I had a hard time cutting into it, too.

Until Annie learned that the jacket's owner had died. He was my age, I noted, by the '81 class year on the arm. So I quickly set about finishing the pillow. I purchased the only fabric that I could find as a border fabric but when I got it home I simply didn't like it. I decided to go back and look for a grey wool or wool felt. In the end, I selected a charcoal grey polar fleece.

The main motif is from the back of the jacket. For the back side of the pillow, I cut apart the hood. The jacket had a snap on hood with a zipper so that it would lay flat on the jacket. (Another nice feature which has gone by the wayside in the modern jackets.) I had enough fabric to piece together the back side.

I added an invisible zipper so that the pillow could be removed and cleaned if desired.

I continue to be amazed by the struggles of those who battle cancer. It is my hope that this pillow can bring a bit of comfort and some happy memories to a hurting family.

What I've Been Doing While "Occupied"

I loved the Occupy Your Sewing Room movement started over at Cat Patches! This has been a busy week for me so it was a good mindset for me to think of myself as "occupying" my sewing room!

I completed the above memory pillow. This a simple and fun project and makes a lovely gift. This one is a gift for a daughter whose father died.

I completed several custom sweatshirt totes. This one we started with an inexpensive, plain sweatshirt and used iron-on letters. The photos are a blur because these were heading out the door as fast as I was sewing them.

I am beginning another memory pillow this evening which is beginning with a varsity jacket. The jacket belonged to a man my age who lost a battle with cancer. His sister asked me to make it - and I learned that he passed away today. She knew it was imminent but wants it to be a memory for his family.

I also completed two T shirt quilts - but I can't share those, either, until they have been given as gifts!

So....my sewing room occupation has been successful, but there's more to do!

Wednesday Sewing - Occupy Your Sewing Room Movement!

Happy Wednesday! Is it Wednesday? It's one of those weeks where every morning I wake up I think it's Saturday....wishful thinking, I suppose. More like, "Tis the Season". Tis the Season for excesses - excessive shopping, excessive baking, excessive worrying, excessive stress....

But then I stumbled upon this fun little movement and now, at least in the sewing studio, I work with a bit of a smile! Head on over to Cat Patches to join in the fun!

I am working on a lot of memory items - both locally and from customers around the country. Many are being made from the clothing of a beloved father. Currently I am making two T Shirt quilts made from a dad's shirts. This isn't my studio, but here's a peak at my process of laying them out.

It's sobering to see the shirts and think about the person wearing them. These shirts are such a fun collection of fish and ocean-side bars, I imagine a crusty, fun-loving man!

Because of recent sewing, I have another batch of T Shirt remnants. These aren't listed yet, but if you are interested in them, let me know. I'm trying to develop a relationship with anyone who uses the shirts for their creations. I have enough rags so would love to see these put to use to make T shirt rugs or T shirt yarn or necklaces....

I'm cheating on my posts because - well - I got a mad Christmas rush of orders, for which I'm grateful! I started my shopping this past weekend. After two stores and loud, obnoxious music, I was ready to find a quiet bar with a piano to escape! (That was in my dreams.) Speaking of piano, though, my son and daughter will be home in a week or so and I will be hearing lots of piano music. My son has a gig at a very neat, little bar and we have a ton of family and friends who want to go out to hear him. Speaking of my son, he's playing at the Governor's mansion tonight! I am so excited for him and can't wait to hear the details! It's a paid gig, too. Someone saw his trio play at the library (the library has a lovely auditorium) and she remembered him. He's hired for solo piano!

Now, to the inspiration....

New in the Shop - Vintage Fabric Apron

I saw this fabric at an estate sale and fell in love with it. It has a country charm, yet modern colors of turquoise and orange. I love to have all-over designs on my aprons because the design helps to cover the spills and splatters!

I only had enough for two aprons. My listing is for one but if you would like two, just let me know before you place your order.

Speaking of orders, T Shirt Quilt orders are closed for the holidays due to the number in my queue. If you are thinking about ordering a quilt for a high school graduate in 2012, I encourage you to gather the shirts as early as possible. Thank goodness I don't have a graduate this year. After two years in a row, it will be great to have a break from the college planning and graduation party work! But I have a lot of personal quilts to make this year as well as a large number of local orders. I may even think about adding an incentive for placing orders early.

On the flip side, I know there are a lot of crafty folks out there. Now might be the time to make your own T Shirt quilt! I have a pattern available that is great for beginners. This is such a fun and satisfying project. It has so many uses. It's great for graduation gifts, but also for sports enthusiasts, the guy in your life, as a memory blanket. It would even make a great wedding gift for the modern, sensible couple who doesn't need another crystal vase or silver whatever in their life! In fact, I will be making a wedding quilt in 2012, also. The idea was inspired by my lovely niece who is getting married in June. I'll share details of that project as it comes along, but I'm very excited about it.

Finally, if there is a baby in your life, I have put together T shirt quilt kits in four colors. All you have to do is cut your T shirts and sew everything together.

Thoughts on Life - Toys R Us Cell Phones

My son was looking through the Toys R Us catalog last night and I was looking over his shoulder. I just about fell off the couch when he turned to this page!

There's just a part of me that feels sad to see cell phones in the toy store catalog.

I'm not criticizing Toys R Us for capitalizing on a business opportunity. I think I'm just lamenting the loss of childhood.

Part of it is that my youngest is now 12. After reorganizing his room a couple weeks ago we removed about five boxes of toys and junk to garage sale. (Don't worry, we saved the classic toys and meaningful memory items in his memory box. My husband still hasn't gotten over the fact that his dad sold his GI Joes at a garage sale...)

He is at the age where he doesn't quite know what toys he wants. And that makes me sad, too.

I think you should never be too old for toys and games. When I was a substitute teacher working with junior high students, I often observed the beginnings of their relationships with the opposite sex. So when classroom parties came up the other moms would say, "Just let them talk."

Not me. I planned wacky relays and fun games. Kids are never too old to play games. They can talk and text and Facebook (ok, they don't talk anymore, really) anytime, but they can't act like kids too often! Guess what - they always had fun at my parties.

Cell phones? I think you know my opinions on them. If not, here's the gist:

cell phones are nothing more than a social vehicle
they do not give parents a sense of security. In fact, I postulate that they can increase anxiety because we think we can be in touch with people 24/7 - and the first time your kid doesn't pick up? Well, let's just say you'll have a few anxious moments.
my girls got phones at 15 - my son when he got a girlfriend
The kids pay for their own phones and service. If they want it as a social toy, then they pay for it.
Now that my older daughter is in college she has learned to disconnect from her friends. She is so busy with her studies that it has been necessary to do so.

I am not against cell phones. I'm just against that we allow these things at younger and younger ages and they are giving our kids access to other kids 24/7. Let's give kids the gift of time - the gift of play - the gift of fun.

Wednesday's Sewing - Yours!

I'm thrilled to share this T Shirt Quilt Blanket with you. I did not make it. Sarah of A League of Her Own made the quilt as a gift for her brother. She used my pattern and she did a fantastic job!

I am so thrilled that Sarah shared the finished product with me. She had a few questions along the way. I asked her if she had any particular problems with my pattern. She said that it didn't print out to the correct dimension even though the test square did. This may be a printer issue as I double-checked it on my printer and it was fine. Just be sure to check your pattern against the measurements.

Sarah said her brother was thrilled with the blanket. What a nice gift!

My niece Katie is the second-oldest of the 18 grandkids. She was the first person I made a T Shirt Quilt for as a high school graduation present. Since she is 28, that was ten years ago! I've made a lot of blankets since then and my design has evolved from that first blanket. But Katie is a gal after my own heart - loves to sew - and she has been making blankets for her friends for years. She shared her first 9-Block blanket with me. This is a baby blanket!

She used an extra-soft, textured brown fleece for the backing. Great job Kate!

Finally, I want to share a customer, Cassie, who was so kind to share pictures of my Bandana Headband on her amazing head of hair! The bandanas are really a headband because they have elastic underneath.

They are designed for big girls and Cassie totally pulls it off! Plus, they are a practical way to keep your hair out of your face - when you're sewing!

I am so excited to share today's interview with Elizabeth from Polka Dot Skies. She - and her Etsy shop - embody wonderful qualities: energy, cheerfulness, positive attitude, and beautiful design, to name a few. I love the pretty items in her shop. I recently purchased some adorable ponytail holders for my great-niece and everyone loved them.

How longhave you been creating?

Since I waslittle. My mom always had lots of blank paper and crayons for us.

What's yourfavorite thing to make?

Ribbon mobiles--especially for nurseries. When my sonwas born, we lived in a one bedroom apartment. He had his own little corner inour room. It’s fun to work with moms who get to plan an entire nursery!

Do you sew?

My mom taught me when I waslittle. I made little purses and a Halloween costume in 5^th grade. Iwas a cheerleader—I remember making the pleated skirt. Sadly, I did not stickwith sewing, I’ve tried a few small projects, but my stitches are always tooloose and fall apart when washed---you won’t be seeing hand sewn items at PolkaDot Skies anytime soon!

What item are you most proud of making?

I think mylatest favorite creation is a pumpkin painting I made with my daughter. We satin our driveway on a pretty autumn day and painted together. It makes me smilewhen I see it!

What do you love and hate about blogging, Twitter and Facebook?

Social media sites are a wonderful place to meet other Etsians. We support andencourage one another. Balancing family life and a business can be overwhelming.It helps to know so many inspiring ladies who are passionate about theirfamilies and their creations! I think we often see a flawless online shop thatwe admire. Then, through the owner’s blog or twitter page, we actually get toknow the person behind the shop. A real person, just like the rest of us. It always makes meadmire their shop even more! Facebook fanpages are a great way to connect with customers! It’s always nice whencustomers take time to comment on a new item or stop by to say hello!

Do youenjoy other hobbies?

I am a runner. I love to read. If we are home on Fridaynights, my husband and I love ordering sushi and watching movies.

I’ve always dreamed of owning a littleplace filled with cheerful, colorful items. It’s very satisfying to know that others loveyour work enough to pay for it! Etsy isthe perfect venue. I can create and list items on my own schedule. I can havemy little shop and be a mom too.

Where doyou create?

I have a spot for suppliesin our bonus room. Colorful supplies look like candy to me! I work at ourcoffee table at night or while my children are at school. I catch up on myfavorite television shows and talk shows while I’m working. I’m crazy about theNate Berkus Show. I always feel inspired to try new color combinations and playwith patterns while I’m watching his design segments.

Are you asmall town or big city girl?

I am a small town girl. I grew up in a little townin South Carolina.We all knew each other’s parents, grandparents, and sometimes evengreat-grandparents!

One of my favorite places to go in Charlotte,NC is Discovery Place. It’s a wonderfulhands-on science museum that brings in interesting exhibits during the year. Agreat place for families to have a fun day learning about nature, electricity,simple machines, etc!

Design Ideas - Fresh from a Teen

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I enjoyed having my two college kids home, two wonderful meals with our families and lots of pie! Having the college kids home always means less sleep for me.

We had incredibly warm weather for Northeast Ohio. My husband joined me for some runs. He also put up the backyard ice rink. (He's a little sore.) Annie and I headed outside to photograph her bags. She's modeling her "Messenger Bag". It's a great bag - the high school and college kids love it for hands free shopping. It has a pocket and a magnetic closure. You can find all of them here in her shop. Even my friends have bought them from Annie and love them.

Another best-seller is Annie's cell phone case. They are just the right size for toting your cell phone and a little cash when you don't want to drag your entire purse with you!

This Capri Sun Bag sold out at the craft show. Every person under the age of 20 that walked by our table picked up and touched these! They would make a great gift card holder or coin purse. She made some adorable mini totes with a graphic, fiber flower on it. Those sold out also - I can't even find a picture! But they made great little tote bags for young girls.

I am proud of Annie and love how she puts fabrics together. I hope that you, too, will find her designs inspiring!

Could it be? Me, miss "untrendy"? Have I jumped on the Missoni bandwagon?

I admit, when the Missoni designs hit Target I had no idea who Missoni was/is. I did know that I didn't care for the zig zag designs. I'm an engineer, after all. I'm a bit Type-A when it comes to lines. I like them straight. (It's the shortest distance between two points.)

So why, oh why, do I find myself thinking about zig zags? And crochet, no less!

"Gentle Art of Knitting"

Well, I think my inspiration comes from Jane Brocket and her lovely book, "The Gentle Art of Knitting." If you are not familiar with the author, she has a beautiful blog and has written a number of books including "The Gentle Art of Domesticity." Her newest book relishes in creating practical (a girl after my own heart!) items to wear and use around the house. Although the book is about knitting, she does share a crochet pattern for an afghan. She points out that crocheting an afghan is easier on the body because the weight is not carried by both arms and shoulders as in knitting. Her selection of colors and stripe pattern design is fresh and modern. She believes it has an art deco feel. I fell in love with it!

I believe there is also a connection to the past. My mother-in-law crocheted a lot of ripple afghans in her day. I think we have one up in the attic made with shades of oranges. I even have the pattern she used!

(The pattern on the right is for a knitted ripple afghan from the book "AlterKnits". There is a crochet version as well and I think I was taken by the turquoise and brown color combination. Also - I rip out patterns from magazines that I like and save them in binders rather than saving magazines.)

So now, in addition to a quilt in my bedroom I'm dreaming about a ripple afghan in neutral shades with stripes of various thickness. What do you think?

New in the Shop

Happy Friday! I've updated my shop and am excited that I have over 100 items in it! It has taken me a long time to reach this point. These items would make great gifts.

This is a simple little "ball tote" that is made with the funnest, shiny, pink fabric and a coordinating teal fabric inside. It is only $10!

I have two aprons for the little ones in your life. The first is a sweet little holiday apron. The second is a unisex design, but I can picture your little boy in it! (After all, these boys will some day be boyfriends and husbands some day....we want to teach them to cook!)

Finally, some stadium seat cushions. These would make great gifts for guys. (OK, not the "football Mom" one - but I also have some Ohio State and other Cleveland area teams. If you are interested in one of those please contact me as I have not listed them in my shop.)

Thoughts on Life - Passion

My husband and I had an opportunity to see my son perform in a college concert last week. If you've been around the blog for a while, you will know that my oldest son is a musician. We thought he would make a good engineer but he is following his passion.

I envy him.

When we were visiting colleges with him I wondered how any 17 year old could know what they want to "be". They are so young. When I was 17 I don't think I had a passion. I was a good student and "smart" by certain standards. I dabbled in an art class and crafts at home, loving them, but never had time to pursue those. I kept forging ahead, selected chemical engineering as a major while also pursing pre-med classes. How do you know if medicine is your passion? Engineering?

By about junior year I was pretty sure engineering was not my passion, but couldn't turn back. I decided that my life would be a journey through many careers.

My daughter started college this year. She is brilliantly smart, opinionated, talented. But finding her passion is a challenge and a journey she is just beginning.

I remember the first few years of working exploring different departments. I loved teaching and working with customers in technical marketing. I also remember, during a class I was taking, drawing "Men and Their Big Heads." (I'll blog about it someday). No wonder I wasn't a very good engineer...I was too busy drawing in class!

So perhaps I wasn't able to find my passion at a young age, but I did hope to be a mother some day. So what are my passions now?

Sewing Pants - Simplicity 2860 - Amazing Fit

I have had this Simplicity 2860 Amazing Fit pants pattern for a while. I don't like how most pants fit my body. I have a belly and most waistband sit on the biggest part of my belly. (I remember when waistlines were actually AT the waist line.) So I thought it would be fun to sew a pair of pants for myself.

I received the impetus I needed to get started when I began working on a pair of custom pants at the boutique at which I sew. The reviews on Pattern Review for these pants were generally very good, so I felt confident I would succeed.

I picked up some bottom weight fabric at JoAnn and sewed away. I completed the pants in a weekend! Here's the review I have posted on Pattern Review.

Pattern Description: Pants with individual pattern pieces given for slim, average and curvy fit....includes customized fitting instructions.

Pattern Sizing: 8 - 16

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes. I typically do not like commercial patterns. The instructions are hard to follow....the diagrams are not easy to read. Perhaps because there are not many pieces in pants, but I found these instructions straightforward and easy to follow.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? The BEST part about this pattern is the ability to customize it to your personal fit. In essence, it is teaching you how to be a tailor.

Fabric Used: A bottom weight from JoAnn. I believe it is a cotton/polyester blend that is supposed to be wrinkle free. It has a little give to it and wrinkles quite easily.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: The pattern steps you through the construction process in such a way so that you can try them on and make fit adjustments. It's completely logical! I did not make belt loops and I did not use the twill tape. Instead of the tape I simply serged the edge.

I share my back view with you. When I first completed them there was some puckering below the rear. I wasn't sure if that was normal. There are all kinds of different levels of fit. Then I was at church and was looking at everyone's behinds and how their pants fit (I know...sinner!) I observed that most pants had these wrinkles. (If you have suggestions, though, I welcome them!)

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I would sew pants again. I would like to try a nice wool or wool blend - something with a little more body. I also would like to raise the waistband up higher.

Conclusion: I am very excited to complete my first pair of pants. They are not perfect, but the process is not intimidating, especially with the "Amazing Fit" pattern. I have several other "Amazing Fit" patterns and look forward to trying those.

I was directed to an article (via a Facebook friend, of course) on the Freakonomics web site. Have you read those books? They are highly interesting and entertaining. They are great to listen to - especially on long car rides.

The Way We Teach Math, Sciences, and Languages Is Wrong

As someone who loves to learn, has taught in and out of the classroom, as a mom who has raised different levels of learners, the topic of how we learn intrigues me. My kids run the range of 99th percentile to struggling reader/learner. What works for one child does not necessarily work for another.

Our country does not rank as high as other countries as far as student performance in the math and sciences. I don't believe it's because we are not spending enough money in the class room. In fact, I have very strong opinions about the use of technology in the classroom. Sure, smart boards are neat and can be used in creative ways, but nothing replaces the creativity of a teacher in engaging a student.

My kids have encountered many a creative and inspiring teacher. They have also encountered mediocre teachers. Frankly, I believe there needs to me more market controls in the education environment. The parents and the students are consumers of education. We should have a voice.

Please don't misunderstand me. I respect and admire teachers. As a substitute teacher I can say that our kids are not always the angels we think they are (as I learned at parent conferences last night. What is it about my boys that their inner clown emerges in 7th grade? I blame my husband's genes.....) But when you view learning through the eyes of someone who struggles, you realize there are better ways to teach.

Sewing Tip - Keep That Foot Still

I have a vinyl floor in my studio (which I love!) However, the sewing machine and serger pedals are always sliding. This, despite the fact that I've added non-slip rug backing underneath them.

My wonderful twitter friends came up with some good suggestions. One suggested rubber feet or cushions - like those that might be used to protect a wall from a frame.

I didn't have any of those, but I did have mounting squares.

This is the bottom of my Janome pedal. Why did they not add a rubber piece to the top? I don't know. Probably because some non-sewing engineer designed it. (Snark.) Mounting squares are sticky on both sides, so it actually sticks to the floor.

I am happy to report it hasn't budged in a week!

Another suggestion was to use a rubbery mouse pad. A simple, brilliant idea! I tested it and it worked very well! Unfortunately, that is the only mouse pad I have. There was a time when I had all kinds of free mouse pads in the house. Those have either been used up or thrown away. But I will hold onto those now!

Design Ideas - Web Site Hosting

Today's design ideas come from Designmodo. Specifically, I won a contest in which I will have two years of web hosting from Zyma!

Yes, that's right, I will have my own web site! I'm very excited about the prospect since this will give me the nudge to take my business to the next level.

I am completely overwhelmed when I go to my account. I have a lot to learn, so if you have any tidbits to offer I will gladly accept them!

Shop Update - Do You Need Fabric Scraps?

I don't have specific items that I am adding to the shop this week. I have been busy preparing items for a craft show that I am doing with Annie. I've made a batch of stadium seat cushions.

I'm also making sweatshirt totes. The following is one of Annie's zippered sweatshirts. It was in the giveaway pile because I didn't think I could make a tote from a zip-up hoodie. But I salvaged the zipper and sewed a seam where the zipper was.

I was really excited to try my hand at a zipper coil flower! I've made several now and find it completely satisfying to make.

Because I love to upcycle and recycle when I can (it's been a large part of my inspiration the past few years) I would like to find a home for the scraps that come from my studio. I produce a lot of T shirt and polar fleece scraps. The T shirts could easily be used to make the T Shirt necklaces that are all the rage. You can see all my destash listings here.

I am mostly interested in finding a use for these scraps. I also have produced more since the time of those photos. Feel free to contact me about combining the fabrics or exploring other shipping options.

Thoughts On Life - The Junk We Collect

Do you have a few of these laying around your house? What about chargers, printers, old computers, telephones, TVs, refrigerators, etc.....

OK, one of those might have gone through the washing machine....but really, it is sad to me that there is so much consumption and waste. A large part of it is due to technological advances. Some of it is due to product quality and some of it is due to the "needs" of my family.

I'll limit my discussion to cell phones today. My husband had a work phone and I had a Tracfone pre-paid for emergencies. My oldest son never wanted one but my next daughter was asking for one. We finally bought a pre-paid cell phone for her birthday. She blew through the minutes in two months. After many arguments we bought the phone back and told her that if she wanted a phone as a social tool then she had to pay for it.

She researched various options and selected a pay-as-you-go plan. And she paid for it (and continues to pay for it.) That has been the rule. Three of my kids now own phones. The 12 year old does not need a phone.

Contrary to popular belief, I believe that cell phones have increased anxiety. They give a false sense of security that you are "always in touch with your loved one." I have many stories where just the opposite happened. The first time I gave the phone to my kids who were driving to a concert I asked them to call me. They forgot, turned the phone off (they are musicians) when they got there and I worried. (In reality, I figured they forgot.) A hairdresser let her 13-year-old go to a New Year's Eve party and her daughter was not where she was supposed to be and not answering her phone. She finally tracked her down at 3 AM. (Yes, she got grounded.) And many, many times that people panicked because they could not reach their loved one when that person's battery died, forgot their phone, don't have good service in a building, etc.

I have taught my kids to make real contingencies. If they go to a party, I want the name, address and phone number (land line) of the friend that lives there. If we separate at the mall, we plan to meet somewhere at a certain time. The old-fashioned methods worked for us back "in the day" and I still like to use them. Do cell phones add a convenience to our lives? Yes they do. But they have also added a lot of stress, expense and waste to our lives as well.

Finished Knitting - Veste Everest

This lovely yarn has finally been transformed into this lovely vest. I love, love, love cables, but they do slow my knitting down. I have even mastered knitting cables without a cable needle, although it was a little difficult with this yarn.

The yarn is a super soft blend of merino, llama, bamboo and Donegal. I really should have knit a full sweater out of it because I will always wear a shirt underneath the vest and can't really appreciate its softness.

I knit the large size and planned that there would be a bit of negative ease. I also extended the length of the vest body below the underarms.

I measured this vest against another that I had knit. However, I did not take into account the negative ease. So when I put the vest on my matronly body, it pulls upward.

It especially pulls up in the front. This is a challenge I need to correct in future knitting projects.

I still have some yarn left so I may add a ribbing. But not now. I want to enjoy wearing it for the fall. You can check out the details on my Ravelry page here!

T Shirt Memory Quilt Blanket

Every time I complete a T Shirt Memory Quilt I feel like I have given birth. I am the proud mother of this beautiful, new "baby".

This quilt is for a customer who lost her dad rather suddenly. She is going to give it to her mom for a Christmas present. It is rather poignant to work on a project that is like a memorial to someone. And to know that her mom will be wrapped in her husband's memories is comforting.

It can be a challenge to find a fabric that pulls a quilt together. We went back and forth with photos and links and we were having a hard time honing in on one. The shirts presented a challenge because the T shirts had some vivid colors in them and the button-down shirts had a more muted tone.

Sometimes it's just easier to spread the T shirts out at the store and bring lots of samples to lay next to them. It also helps to get a little advice, so I headed to an area quilt shop and used their "color eye" to help me find a fabric.

The one we settled on has some interesting color splashes in it and the gold has a bit of sheen. I backed the blanket with a denim blue polar fleece.

My customer sent along some extra shirts. I was inspired by a Martha Stewart craft I had seen. I made pillow covers for her. I thought it was a perfect addition to the T Shirt Blanket. She simply has to add a pillow form and button up the shirt! It's practical because it's easy to remove and wash, but also an additional memory.

Thoughts on Life - Homecoming

Annie had homecoming a few weeks ago. Even though she is a budding seamstress, and even though I made most of her sister's dresses, she "bought" a dress! She made the pearl necklace, earrings and bracelet. The dress was cream with a pink sash. The pink was an off shade, so it was hard to find the right color. She scored a pair of shoes at Payless for $2 - we accepted that it was just a tad "off."!

Prior to the dance Annie was confident the strapless dress would not present a problem. (I've had my share of problems in the past.) But as the dance approached she realized it was not as snug as she would like. It fit well in the waist, so I sewed a simple pair of darts in the back. I also offered to stitch in a couple loops so that she could add some clear straps. I thought the straps would be wise once she started dancing, but she refused, insisting that it would look "bad." We also added the special bra tape, but it still ended up being uncomfortable and Annie learned that she will never wear a strapless dress again. (See my past challenges here and here.)

The evening was a success. We hosted 12 teens for dinner. We had a gaggle of parents and kids taking photos in the yard, then headed in for a lively dinner. The kids were very well-behaved and nice. You see them toasting sparkling juice!

Are You Sewing What I'm Sewing?

Sigh....I hate mending and repair. It does not full under the realm of what I call "fun sewing" - which is sewing anything new. My inbox is always filled with buttons to sew on, rips in lining, hems that need repair. As I was preparing this post, the inside button of my pants fell off! (I still have the slider hooks, so I'm not going to bother sewing it back on....)

But even more than the drudgery of mending and alterations is my anger that the junk we buy so often is in need of immediate repair. How frequently have you had a button fall off before you wore an article of clothing the first time? How often have you seen a buttonhole whose stitching is coming undone? I had to fix my daughter's purse that she paid $25 for within two weeks of purchase.

These chairs were a gift. I can't recall how old they are - perhaps 2 years? We use them for my son's baseball and football games and a few trips to the beach. But I wouldn't expect the canvas to be worn thin so quickly. To make matters worse, I had to repair it while still connected to the metal parts. I won't bother to show you my repair. I took pieces of polyester webbing (I burned the edges to seal it) and top-stitched it over and along the ripped seams. It's not pretty, but should add strength to the area.

I know nothing lasts forever, but doesn't it seem the things we buy should last longer than a season or a year? What do you do with things that need repair? Do you like mending?

This is one of the reasons I derive great satisfaction from creating with my own hands. I can see the end result. It doesn't guarantee perfection or that it will last forever, but I can control what I am producing.

Review of this cord minder

As someone who sews, pressing is very important to me. I press throughout the construction process to set my stitches and have a nice, crisp seam. It is especially important to me when constructing my T Shirt memory quilts. There are many criss-crossing seams and there is a lot of material on my ironing board.

Due to the size of my studio and the location of my plug, I feel like I am always fighting the cord on my iron. It gets in the way, gets stuck on the end of the board or falls on the fabric. A cord minder seemed like the perfect solution.

I tested three different cord minders, two of which are shown (and reviewed) above. They all failed to meet my needs. My husband, an excellent mechanical engineer, salvaged the parts and has promised to design one for me. We've discussed several possibilities - a retractable cord might work well - or perhaps a coiled cord suspended from a point above me.

But life gets in the way and the cord minder is forgotten at the bottom of the "to do" list.

Here's a peek at the memory blanket I'm finishing up for a customer. The cord was driving me batty, so I decided to take design matters into my own hands.

A simple design - a loop of webbing holding the cord and duct tape holding it onto my cabinet. Now we enjoy all the duct tape geekery in our house. (Did you ever see the Myth Busters episode exploring its strengths?) We have all kinds of fabulous colors. I know we have black tape somewhere, but I was too lazy to search the house and car for it. (I think the last time it was used was to tape up my son's football cleats because they had separated at the toe.)

Yes, sometimes practical function has to trump all aesthetic aspects of design. Besides, I know that green piece of tape will drive my husband crazy. Stay tuned for a much nicer cord minder to come.....but in the mean time, simplicity has its place and I can get back to pressing matters.

Thoughts on Life - The Family Dinner

I think I may have done two things right as a parent: read to my kids and made the family meal a priority. Now, the table is not always loving set like it is above (for Annie's homecoming dinner). But the world just feels "right" when we are eating together.

I had heard about a study that said the only major factor that Rhodes Scholars had in common was their participation in a family dinner. A recent study showed that kids who ate with their family were more likely to consume fewer calories.

I can't tell you if this is occurring at our table or if a future Rhodes Scholar sits among us, but I can tell you that the dinner table is full of lively conversation and debate on topics of the day, what people are saying on Twitter and Facebook, drama (where there are girls there is drama...), the news, happenings at school and in the world. We will challenge each other to defend opinions, support each other when in doubt, and poke fun when we can.

The table is often extended to include friends and family members. Countless memories have been created around that table. It brings me back to my own family dinners. Eight of us sitting around a large table in a small kitchen. My mom had no counter space so the table acted as the counter until dinner was ready. I spilled my milk every day. I now defend my clumsiness as the result of sitting in the middle, as the youngest, and having to pass food back and forth the entire time.

Life was simpler. You played outside until you were called in for dinner. Today we are helping with homework, running kids to appointments, sports, music lessons. But I tell you, I hate doing those things late in the day. Yes, even doctor appointments. It messes with my meal plans!

Do we eat together every day as a family? No. But being with my family around the dinner table is one of my greatest pleasures. With two college kids passing by each other on breaks, I have a narrow window tonight where we can sit down, all of us, to dinner. Even my twelve-year old has chosen not to attend football practice so he can be home with his brother.

I think I have done something right.

Sewing Tidbits This Week

There's a great little free Ebook on Sew Daily - it's a Free Guide to Sewing Silk Fabric and Knit Fabric which are often tricky to sew.

I sent off this custom bag. It's made from a Ty Pennington fabric from Contemporary Cloth.

Some other sewing I've done in the past few weeks: wine totes for my friend and neighbor. She organizes the very lovely Cleveland Wine Opener, one of the wine events for Cystic Fibrosis. We have enjoyed the event for the last few years. We get to taste some amazing wines in the VIP reception, as well as wines and foods galore. There is a live auction, silent auction and a market. The market is fun because you can take away a nice item and know your money is going to a good cause.

I was playing around with my coffee sacks again. This photo isn't the best, but I whipped up a little market bag. It's a simple, unlined bag. I'm trying to decide if I like it. It's a little rumply and I'm not sure the type-A in me likes it.

Design Ideas - the Rustic Shawl

I finally saw the movie Jane Eyre. I am planning to watch it again with my daughter who is home on break. I don't know why, but I am enamored by the simple, rustic shawl she wears.

It reminds me of the shawl worn by Matty in Cranford. (I love Cranford and also watched Return to Cranford recently.)

There are discussion groups for Jane Eyre and Gaskell on Ravelry and much discussion has evolved around these shawls. (There are also discussions about Kate Middleton's shawl, which I think is cute, but comes down quite long in the front.)

There are many great shawl patterns to peruse, but I really like the Eyre of Romance pattern by Kay Meadors. I was particularly enamored with Patrice's version of this pattern.

I love the gentle ruffles and Patrice says that it sits really well on the shoulders. I am itching to get started. I'd like to check out the Cascade Ecological Wool that Patrice used. It has such an earthy, rustic feel.

Thoughts on Life - My 5K Playlist

Just cuz you want to know, right?

In my journey from Couch to 5K I found that a good playlist went a long way in motivating me to keep running. Annie created some for me, which were fun because I never knew what song was coming next. I tried a variety of genres. But when it came time to run the first 5K I created a special playlist. It started as something of a "contemplative" list. Music that makes me think or that I get lost in. I thought about it being all instrumental but it became more of a favorites list. Annie couldn't believe I was running to this boring and, often, slow playlist! But you have to know that I also envisioned myself running through the vineyards on a gorgeous autumn day....just as I imagine myself in the Tuscan countryside....Well, you know what the reality was - a mudbath! But this playlist gives you a glimpse into my eclectic tastes, from musicals (Les Mis) to soundtracks (Becoming Jane) to piano (George Winston) to my everything (Jamie Cullum).

(I love Jamie Cullum just about as much as I love James McAvoy....anyone see my "Fav Actors board on Pinterest lately???)

A Sweet Gingham Doll

As I reflect on my sewing career, I realize I have sewn miles on my machines. I usually try to avoid hand-sewing if it can be done by machine. I didn't get my first machine until I was 29 years old. Prior to that I sewed everything by hand.

When I was young I received many craft kits from my parents and relatives. One project that I enjoyed was a miniature teddy bear. I made that bear over and over again. As nieces and nephews appeared I would stitch up a bear for them.

Eventually, I got a machine, and was able to expand my creations to larger dolls and stuffed animals. I ventured into clothing for my kids and accessories for the home.

Now a new generation has arrived in the family and I found myself wanting to create a simple doll for my great-niece who is turning one. I found this simple, gingham doll on Martha Stewart. The instruction page includes templates for an entire family of dolls that are simple to make. With only two pieces, I stitched around the fabric using my sewing machine. But it could have easily been stitched by hand. I turned it inside out, stuffed the doll, and hand-sewed the opening closed. I added simple eyes and mouth and some yarn hair to complete the look.

The simplicity of using my hands to create this doll was rewarding.

Inspiration - Meet Vintage Eye

Today I share an interview with Vintage Eye. How can you not be inspired by that eye looking at you? I met Vintage Eye on Twitter and had to learn more about the head beholding that eye!

Whenand how did your love of vintage start?

Itall began in my aunts’ kitchen. They had all the original cooking gear that hadbelonged to their mother. Old wooden spoons worn smooth on the handles from use-yellow ware bowls with well earned chips & a hand cranked mixer that gaveyou a real work out! Plus they had a trunk in the attic filled with clothesfrom the 1920 that I played dress up with. I’ve been a vintage junkie since wayback!

Tell me about your shops.

I guess I will gochronologically. Satellite Daisy (so named for a salvaged satellite dish Ipainted to look like a daisy) began as an art, craft & photography shop. Iadded a few vintage items & it soon became clear that people preferred themto my own creations. Live & learn I always say. So I took my own advice& opened Vintage Eye to sell the vintage housewares. Next came Vintage EyeFashion which served to house the vintage clothing & accessories. I haveadded vintage supplies to Satellite Daisy & they have done pretty well.

Do you blog?

Ihave dabbled in blogging on Artfire (where I also have a shop) but I don’t havemy own. I am an avid reader of OPPs though! (other people’s blogs)

Doyou enjoy other hobbies?

Iam an avid reader of books as well as OPPs. I am a political & historyjunkie. I walk, do yoga, cook & bake. I love to travel—road trips, planes,trains---& I am a big fan of maps, dogs, abandoned barns & baseball.Let’s Go Mets!

Do(did) you work and/or study outside thehome?

Ihad a 20 year career as an RN working in critical care, post anesthesia,medical-surgical, endoscopy & out patient. I have been considering dippinga toe back in the nurse waters….but my vintage gig is full time at present.

Sodescribe your home décor. Is itvintage? (Can vintage be a design?)

Myhome décor is definitely eclectic! Each room has a different feel. Retro 70sbathroom, modern cottage kitchen, rustic colonial sun porch…each room isaccented with lots of vintage that I move into the shop & when I findsomething else I like better! One of the many benefits of the vintage trade!

Howdid you develop a love for ugly lamps?

Ihave no real explanation for the lamp thing…they speak to me somehow and Ijust have to bring them home!

Doyou have the famous leg lamp? (My neighbor puts his out every Christmas.)

Ido not have a leg lamp but I wouldn’t say no if I happened upon one!

Whatabout fashion – do you like vintage styles? If so, what’s your favorite?

I do love all periods of vintage fashion butmy favorite era would have to be early 1960s. Jackie Kennedy was so influential& has become such a style icon. I have fond memories of the styles mymother wore back then.

Areyou a small town or big city girl?

Iam from a big city…New York City to be exact. I now live in a small town in SC.

I love the quiet here but I do like to get tothe city now & again. I was in Brooklyn for Hello Etsy a few weeks ago.

Favoritevacation spot.

Lately, it’s been Los Angeles. Our son & his wife live there& we go at least once a year to visit. Last time we took the train to SanDiego. It was a wonderful ride, much of it right along the Pacific Ocean &my husband got to cross the zoo off his bucket list. But our daughter moved toAustin TX last year so we will be getting to know the Lone Star state soon!

Fondestchildhood memory.

RuralConnecticut, late summer, listening to the birds sing while stretching out onthe rope hammock as dappled sunlight filtered through the trees and the breeze madethe leaves dance! It was almost magical & I can still close my eyes &see it all just like it was yesterday.

Well,we are awash in all things southern, honey child! You don’t push a button-youmash on it. You also burn your headlights & get your picture made (nottaken). I may ask you to carry me (drive me) to the Piggly Wiggly or ask youwhere you stay at (where you live) The local dish here is Chicken Bog a slowcooked rice, chicken & sausage dish. In fact The Loris Bog Off, a festivalthat includes a chicken bog cooking contest is this month! Y’all should findsomebody to carry you on over here!

Swedishfish but only the red ones & I think those would be better dipped inchocolate.

Yourscariest moment?

When our son was born he was ill with pneumonia & we didn’tknow if he was going to be okay for a few days. We were terrified. He’s 31 now!

Whathelps you when you are in a bad mood?

Irather enjoy a good bad mood… but if I need to snap out of it lots of wellplaced f-bombs will help but I always prefer driving too fast down the countryroads while blasting Harvey Danger’s FlagpoleSitta’ on the CD player. Works every time!

Design Elements - Spider Web

Today's design inspiration....created by nature!

We discovered this spider near the house and were fascinated by the color and the legs! A little internet research revealed that it is a St. Andrew's Cross Spider. It is named after the martyr who was killed on a cross shaped in the "X" formed by the legs. Yes, there are eight legs!

That little zig zag in the web is put there by the spider. Its exact purpose is unknown. It may act as a marker to keep large animals like birds out of the web. It may be for reinforcement or it may actually attract insects because it reflects UV. We watched this spider catch an insect and quickly run to get it, wrap it up and eat it!

I am grateful for the past week in Northeast Ohio - they have been perfect!

Lots of New Items in the Shop

Friday is my shop update day. I have been busy in the studio for the past several weeks and want to share my new items! I'm most excited about the table runners. As I have mentioned before, I'm not a big fan of holiday decor. I also only own a few tablecloths. Since I only have one kitchen/dining room table, I get tired of using those after a while. But I have found that the table runners offer a way to dress up the table and room a bit without being overly fussy!

Thursday Thoughts on Life - What is Local?

This week we enjoyed fabulous Graeter's ice cream! An old friend and I have had a friendly college football bet over the years. And, thanks to his alma mater's team, I won a case of ice cream delivered to my door!

This ice cream was born in Cincinnati and we have enjoyed it on trips to cities in southern Ohio. But it is not easily found up here in Cleveland. I love things that are unique to a locality. Sure, it is exciting for a company to be sold nationally, but there is something special about something you can't buy at the grocery store every day.

(Oh yeah, the boys had a great deal of fun with the dry ice!)

I grew up near an amusement park which closed when I was very young.. But the custard, the popcorn balls and the candy kisses. Oh, they were delicious! The candy kisses were shaped like salt water taffy but were sweeter, harder, chewier. The Humphrey Company still makes them and the taste of them evokes so many memories.

I love to find what makes certain parts of a city or our country unique. I don't like the homogenization of our country. When I travel and see one strip mall after another with all the famous chains I find it boring. Show me the mom and pop restaurants and shops. I'll never forget when my husband took a business trip to Canada and I asked him where he was eating....some chain restaurant. So now when we travel and I'm ready for McDonald's he exhorts me to find something unique.

I love to find little Italian restaurants and have found old ones in Niagara Falls, Evanston and Washington, D.C. On a trip to Chicago with my parents we found a neat little restaurant called Eli's. Jackets were required and my dad didn't have one so they loaned him one. Every time we went to Chicago we went to that restaurant. When I took my family there a few years ago I was surprised it was no longer there due to a hospital expansion project.

The big news locally was that Yuengling beer was now being sold in Ohio. People used to travel to Pennsylvania to buy it. Some of the great local products are maple syrup, Great Lakes Beer, and fiber. Did you know Ohio has more alpacas than any other state?

It's one of my favorite questions to ask people that I meet. What's unique to the area in which you live?

You may be familiar with my Sweatshirt Tote Tutorial. Since writing it, I have experimented with different straps. Inspired by an Antrhopologie bag that Annie's friend was wearing, I wanted to make a single strap.

I used the sleeves for the strap. First, I cut the sleeves into a flat piece and sewed them together, end-to-end. I then created a long, shaped strap by sewing the fabric into a tube. The finished size of the strap is about 30" long (total), 4" wide at the bottom narrowing to 3" in the middle (the part that sits on the shoulder.) This could easily be extended by adding more fabric. With the fabric doubled, it does not stretch too much. So it works well as a shoulder strap. You can make a longer, cross-body strap.

I also made a boxed bottom to add a little dimension to the bag.

Design Elements - Help Me Spice Things Up in the Bedroom

Take a peek inside my bedroom. I need your help! Our bedroom is simple. It is not large enough for any seating, so the only furniture is the bed, side tables, dresser and armoire. I don't spend a lot of time in the here, but wanted a calm feeling, nevertheless. The walls are a khaki color. I was amazed at how difficult it was to find a duvet that matched the khaki. There are a lot of subtleties to the shade. I made the pillows to add a bit of punch to the room. I also made the dust cover. The dust "ruffle" is necessary because I store suitcases, yarn and a few wedding dresses under there. (I'll save that for another post...but my Twitter friends may have heard it.) I wanted a tailored dust ruffle, but most available in retail were not long enough for my bed which is higher than standard beds. Also, they didn't have a break at the corner, so it wouldn't hang properly. So I took a fitted sheet and stitched rectangles to it. Fairly simple, although I didn't do a good job of smoothing out the wrinkles for this photo.

What are those things sticking out of the bed? Those are our reading lamps. Have you ever bought clip on lamps and wondered how you are supposed to clip them onto anything and still be able to aim them at your book? Most are impossible! So my husband built a wooden post behind the headboard and we have very low wattage lights in the lamps so that we can read at any time of the night. If I had an unlimited budget I would have designed a room with indirect lighting and small, narrow recessed spots in the ceiling....but I can only dream.

I don't even have any artwork on the walls! So here's where you can help. I have been thinking about making a new duvet cover or even venturing to make a quilt. I'm torn between the tranquil neutral color of the room and having something a little more interesting. I searched on "modern bedroom quilts" and pinned a few ideas to my Pinterest account here.

If you have any ideas for me - anything from suggestions of artwork for the wall to quilts to duvets to fabrics, please throw them at me!

A Different T Shirt Quilt Stadium Blanket

I was so excited to create this T Shirt quilt for a dear friend!

I was inspired to try a variation on my standard T Shirt Quilt when I saw sweatshirt fleece at Jo-Ann.

I backed this quilt with sweatshirt fleece, with the fuzzy side facing out, with the intention that this quilt could be used as a stadium blanket. On those chilly Friday nights, you could wrap yourself in something as cozy as your favorite sweatshirt!

The blanket is a hefty 5 feet by 6 feet and uses 20 shirts. I cut the shirt larger than my standard quilt and eliminated the sashing strip.

The recipient of this blanket gifted most of these shirts to our family! Don't worry, even though I used up twenty shirts, there are plenty left hanging in our closets!

I oriented the shirts along the wider side of the rectangle. I figured that this way, when you are wrapped up in this blanket, everyone could read the T shirts!

The kids absolutely fell in love with this blanket. I'm not sure if it was the bigger size, the weight of the blanket or the fuzzy fleece.

Even though it feels hefty, the blanket folds up compactly.

I was thrilled to make this for our friend. Since I know he's reading, I'll add that your generosity to this family is greatly appreciated - as well as your friendship!
